Rouhani in Italy: "Fight against ISIS without ambiguity"

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani arrived in Italy as part of his first visit to European territory since sanctions on the Islamic Republic were lifted thanks to the nuclear deal.

This morning Rouhani went to talks with the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. During the meeting, the two leaders spoke of the terrorism emergency caused by the advance of Isis. Both agreed that the fight against the Islamic State is now more than ever an international priority, to be carried out without any ambiguity. "Terrorism is the most serious and most pressing threat to the international community," Mattarella underlined. For his part, Rohani reiterated that "everyone must unambiguously fight this scourge by making scorched earth around Daesh".

At the center of the conversation was also the Libyan question on which President Mattarella underlined the need to form a government chosen by the free themselves, otherwise any intervention in the country will be difficult. Once an internal balance has been achieved, it was also reiterated, it will be possible to act more effectively in the fight against terrorism and human traffickers. The meeting was also attended by the foreign minister, Paolo Gentiloni, and on the Iranian side a delegation of ministers including the foreign minister, the oil minister and the industry minister.

At the same time, the Iranian president backed Italy's candidacy as a non-permanent member of the UN security council. At 19 Hassan Rohani will meet the Premier Matteo Renzi.
