Romania: president at risk of impeachment

Three weeks before the elections, the political controversies in Romania are not over. The institutional crisis now seems to be upon us after the President of the Republic, the liberal Klaus Iohannis, vetoed the candidacy for the premiership of the Muslim economist Sevil Shhaideh, proposed by the Social Democrats winners at the polls.

However, the latter did not decide to give up and responded by threatening the impeachment of the head of state.

The story began last September 11, the day of the political elections in which the social democratic party led by Liviu Dragnea swept away its liberal opponents by more than twenty percentage points.

Dragnea, cannot become prime minister because he was convicted of electoral fraud. The centre-left party therefore chose Sevil Shhaideh, an economist from a family of the Tatar minority, who would have been the first Muslim woman to lead the Romanian government. At this point, surprisingly, the President of the Republic Iohannis entered the scene and, after having "carefully weighed the pros and cons", asked the Social Democrats to name another name.

A decision that has unleashed the wrath of the entire party who accused the head of state of wanting to "open a political crisis" and of having made an arbitrary choice devoid of any constitutional motivation.

The Social Democrats therefore feared the possibility of asking for his impeachment.
