Romania: retirees outnumber workers, welfare at risk

In Romania there are more retirees than active workers and this seriously jeopardizes the stability of welfare in the years to come. The economic daily Ziarul Financiar wrote it today.

In 1990, after the fall of the communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, Romania had 8,1 million active inhabitants and 3,5 million pensioners. But with the transition to a market economy and then with the recession, the country has lost hundreds of thousands of jobs.

In 2012, the number of employed people fell to 4,3 million out of a total population of 20 million, while the number of retired people rose to 5,3 million. “If this trend continues, Romania risks no longer being able to support pension payments in 10 years,” explained Professor Mircea Cosea.

Over two million Romanians have left the country to find work in other EU countries, mainly in Spain and Italy.
