Rome, waste: Government sticks the Rays and M5s puts it under scrutiny

The waste chaos continues to rage in Rome. The capital is submerged in rubbish and the "Muraro case" shows no sign of abating.

The Minister of the Environment Gian Luca Galletti also intervened on the matter, expressing the concern of the Government during today's question time in the Chamber: "In the capital of Italy, the waste situation has become frankly worrying. The legal instruments for overcoming the emergency already exist – underlined the minister. I ask the mayor Virginia Raggi and the president of the Lazio Region Nicola Zingaretti to use them ".

According to Galletti, "it is the task of the Municipality, also through its in-house company Ama, to initiate the refusal to authorized plants, in compliance with the principles of proximity, economy and environmental sustainability, guaranteeing users an adequate service commensurate with the tariff system, which sees in Rome the capital, specific annual per capita costs higher than the average values of other regions, as confirmed by the Ispra 2015 waste report”.

In some neighborhoods, highlighted the owner of the environment, the situation has reached "limit conditions" that can no longer be ignored. The government is monitoring the situation closely and also proceeded to request an intervention from the Lazio Region. The latter should carry out, supported by Arpa, "the due and necessary checks on the correct operation of all the plants serving Rome, aimed not only at the effectiveness of the treatment, but also at the quality of the incoming and outgoing waste".

Galletti then addressed the mayor Raggi directly: "The doors of my ministry are always open, however, I say it clearly, if things continue to degenerate there will no longer be any intervention that takes place on the part of my ministry".

In the meantime, Virginia Raggi's difficulties continue. The Capitoline mayor was placed under examination by the Directorate of the 5 Star Movement. According to what was reported by the Huffington Post, a "super summit" was held yesterday evening at the home of Alessandro Di Battista in the presence of Luigi Di Maio, Carlo Sibilia, Roberto Fico and Carla Ruocco and the deputy mayor Daniele Frongia.

The Grillini top management would be annoyed by the extensive power entrusted by Raggi to some members of his staff, such as Raffaele Marra and Salvatore Romeo. The Directory allegedly asked the mayor not to be influenced by "non-grillismo", curbing the initiatives of the two. With regard to Muraro however, his role would not be in question. However, the commissioner would have been summoned by the pentastellati top management to deepen every aspect of her advice in Ama.

Despite the "examination in progress", however, the board would have renewed its trust in Raggi, inviting her to go ahead with her work.
