Rome and Milan, EU summit and Pope's visit ok

The day of demonstrations in Rome ended with less tension than expected, on the occasion of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome and the signing of the new agreement between the 27 current member countries of the European Union. After the institutional part of the celebration day for the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, attention moved to the marches planned for the afternoon in the capital. But the fears on the eve of the presence of black bloc fortunately proved unfounded and the Eurostop procession, which started from Porta San Paolo, arrived without major incidents at the Bocca della Verità.

Only one moment of tension occurred at Lungotevere Aventino when a group of demonstrators tried to climb Clivio di Rocca Savella but the police chased them without success, then a cordon of agents blocked the climb. The queue of the demonstration, made up of about 1000 people, remained behind and the police, perhaps fearing a detour towards the Lungotevere, divided the demonstration into two sections with vehicles. However, the procession all arrived at its destination before 18 pm.

The situation was also calm in Milan for the visit of Pope Francis: Bergoglio's day in the Lombard capital began with a visit to the public housing in via Salomone, in a neighborhood on the edge of the city. From the extreme eastern suburbs of the city, the Pope reached the heart of Milan. In the Cathedral, again with Archbishop Scola at his side, Francis first met the priests, nuns and religious of the Ambrosian diocese. Then, amidst heavy security measures, the Pope once again crossed the city to the San Vittore prison where he met all 900 inmates and had lunch with 100 of them, who also cooked. Finally, the big party at San Siro, with 80 young people being confirmed with relatives and educators.
