Rome: Bertolaso is the centre-right mayoral candidate

The centre-right unveils its cards, the candidate for mayor of Rome will be Guido Bertolaso. All agree from the leader of Forza Italia Silvio Berlusconi to that of the Northern League Matteo Salvini. Giorgia Meloni also said yes.

The former number one of the Civil Protection has already accepted the proposal: “I am honored by the proposal that Berlusconi, Salvini and Meloni have formulated for me. Thanks to the progressive improvement in the health conditions of my beloved niece, which allow me to regain the necessary peace of mind, I accept this new challenge aware that everyone's commitment will be indispensable and it will be just as fundamental to dedicate every energy and every effort, every day, to improve the living conditions of Roman citizens, to restore decorum and prestige to a city now truly reduced to emergency conditions. For the love of Rome, for its history and for the respect that the Romans deserve,” explained Bertolaso from London, where he is at the moment.

The decision came after the refusal of Rita Dalla Chiesa and above all after the announcement by Giorgia Meloni herself of her state of pregnancy which would prevent her from carrying out the electoral campaign for the Capitol.

A few weeks ago, through a letter, Guido Bertolaso announced a step back precisely because of his granddaughter's health problems. But the improvements of the little girl allowed him to retrace his steps, accepting the candidacy.

The choice of the centre-right could soon encounter difficulties. Next 4 March, the former head of the Civil Protection will have to face the hearing in the "Great Risks Bis" proceeding at the Court of L'Aquila, in which he is involved on charges of multiple manslaughter and bodily harm

According to Silvio Berlusconi, “Guido Bertolaso is the best mayor Rome could wish for to recover from the situation in which it has been reduced by the administration of the Democratic Party and the left. Bertolaso is a man of action. As head of the Civil Protection he has given indisputable demonstrations of great managerial skills, knowing how to manage epochal events and happenings, including the waste crisis in Naples and Campania, the after-earthquake in Abruzzo and the relocation of the G8 to L'Aquila ”.

We recall that, on the other political side, the centre-left has already announced the primaries which will take place on 6 March. Six names in the running at the moment: Roberto Giachetti, Roberto Morassut, and Stefano Pedica for the Democratic Party; Domenico Rossi of the Democratic Center; Gianfranco Mascia spokesperson for the Greens and Chiara Ferraro, a girl with autism who decided to participate in order to emphasize the rights of people with disabilities.

Supported by the Italian Left and part of SEL, but outside the primaries, there is also Stefano Fassina, while Alfio Marchini will run alone with a civic list. Finally, Francesco Storace remains on the field.
