Roaming: the new EU proposal to abolish tariffs

(Teleborsa) – The European Commission takes measures and presents a new proposal for the abolition of roaming tariffs, charged as additional costs to mobile telephone users who are in another country of the Union.

The proposed new measure aims to allow the use of mobile phones and smartphones abroad at the same rates as at home, avoiding, with a series of safeguards, the occurrence of abuses against telephone companies.

Abuse, such as the permanent use of a SIM card from a country that has lower rates than the member state where the user resides. Another type of abuse that Brussels fears is that of a possible "black market" for SIM cards, with their massive purchase in a country with low rates and their resale in other Member States with higher rates.

The new package of measures comes a few days after the unexpected step back by the EU which withdrew the proposal to cancel roaming tariffs only for those traveling within the European Union for at least 90 days.

The new proposal, called by the Commission "Roam like at home" provides for zero roaming for everyone, with no time limit or data or voice volume limitation.

The new system proposed by the Commission, which will enter into force on 15 June 2017, will be submitted for discussion with the Member States, the national regulatory authorities for electronic communications and other interested parties.

The final approval by the Commission remains fixed, as already envisaged, for 15 December next.
