Roaming, the new tariffs starting today: how much you pay and how much you save

From Saturday 30 April they will come into force the new roaming tariffs established by the European Parliament in the context of the "Telecom Single Market". A change that implies huge savings for all citizens in view of 15 June 2017, the date from which, based on the new rules, no operator will be able to apply any additional cost on telephone calls, text messages and internet traffic from abroad.

Much lower costs for roaming phone calls, SMS and internet. Going into detail, the rate for calls cannot exceed 5 cents per minute (today it is 19). For messages, the cost will have to be equal to 2 cents against today's, while for internet traffic operators will no longer have the possibility of exceeding the threshold of 5 cents for each megabyte of data traffic compared to the current 20 cents.

The above rates do not include VAT and must be added to those provided by your national plan.

“The abolition of roaming charges has been long awaited by everyone” – explained Pilar del Castillo, rapporteur of the plan during the vote – “Thanks to this agreement, Europe will become the only region in the world which legally guarantees an open network. The principle will be applied directly in the 28 member states”.

On balance therefore, starting today, April 30, each user will spend about 70-75% less compared to the rates in effect until yesterday.

In summary, here are the new tariffs in force from today:

-          Outgoing calls: national rate + 0,5 euro cents per minute,

-          Incoming calls: national rate + 0,01 cents per minute,

-          Outgoing sms: national rate + 0,02 cents,

-          Online connection: national tariff + 0,5 megabyte cents
