Volvo revolution: from 2019 it will produce only electric or hybrid cars

A 'historic' change for Volvo Cars, which has promised that from 2019 it will no longer produce cars with combustion engines, but only electric or hybrid cars. The Swedish manufacturer, which belongs to the Chinese Geely, has announced that between 2019 and 2021 it intends to launch five electric models, three under its brand and two under the Polestar brand, as well as a range of hybrid cars.

“This announcement marks the end of cars powered by a combustion engine,” said CEO Haekan Samuelsson. However, the group will also produce after 2019 petrol and diesel models launched before that date, which will however gradually be replaced by 'ecological' ones. In an interview released last May to the German newspaper 'Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung' Samuelsson had already stated that the manufacturer would no longer develop a new generation of petrol and diesel models following the tightening of regulations.

Volvo Cars aims to reach one million electric car production before 2025, when its manufacturing operation will be “climate-neutral”.
