Revelations from the Legambiente Report: turnover of the ecomafia, 16,6 billion in 2011

“The eco-mafia is always active” declares the report that tomorrow will be presented by Legambiente at the Nuovo Cinema Aquila in Rome. THEThe "Ecomafia Report 2012" analyzes and discloses the activities of the 296 clans in Italy that illegally manage waste. The national anti-mafia prosecutor Piero Grasso, Sonia Alfano, president of the European anti-mafia parliamentary commission, Gaetano Pecorella, president of the commission of inquiry into illegal activities connected to the waste cycle and other important figures attached to the anti-mafia and anti-criminal associations will be present at the appeal. In 2011, the eco-mafia became a 16,6 billion euro business of which 56% is the result of the trafficking of special waste, illegal building, illegality in the agri-food sector and animal trafficking. Unfortunately, the rest of this cash comes from investments stained with the mafia's black ink.

In 2010, Legambiente had revealed that illegally managed waste amounted to 14,5 million tons, and in 2011 the activities became heavier, making the quantity rise to 346 thousand. To give you an idea, this is equivalent to the weight of 13,848 Tir, or a line of trucks more than 188 kilometers long. Other frightening figures include the result of the illegal construction of the ecomafia which recorded unauthorized constructions and renovations with a turnover of 1,8 billion euros.

The 296 clans share the fruit of all this. They increased in number in 2011, originally they were 290. These are all the facts revealed by the Report which will be presented tomorrow, offering further information on the phenomena of criminality which attacks and represses the environment in Italy.
