Returning to the library thanks to virtual reality: the project of the Polytechnic of Turin and Tim is underway

Bringing culture closer through technology. This is the objective of the Reading (&) Machine Project launched by the Turin Polytechnic, in collaboration with the University of Turin and the Turin civic libraries, and supported by the Tim Foundation. Today there are once non-existent amusements such as television and the internet but this does not mean that they must replace reading, they can instead be tools to make the use of culture easier and more accessible, seizing the opportunities that artificial intelligence, augmented reality and virtual reality can offer with a hybrid mode. Return to the library conjugating real e virtual.

It is an innovative mechanism for exploring the collections of libraries and bookshops that exploits recommendation systems that already today suggest which content, film, piece might be of interest to the user. The challenge will be to adapt these systems to the library world to enhance and enrich the reading experience.

Vice-rector Matteo Sonza Reorda said: "Technology today offers new solutions that were unthinkable until a few years ago in all areas of society, and our University is committed to making it increasingly accessible by making it available to users of all ages and cultural training. This important project is an example of this”.

In the last two years, the Tim Foundation has been very active on this front, especially with the closure of libraries and cultural spaces to counter the pandemic, there has been the closure of libraries and cultural spaces. For example, the president Salvatore Rossi recalled the call for tenders of the Tim Foundation. "We believe that what has been conceived by the Polytechnic of Turin is an innovative model in this direction", added Rossi.
