Terna will invest 65 million euros for the construction of the high voltage line in the Gallura area. The authorization process for the "Santa Teresa-TempioBuddusò" power line has begun, the new infrastructure in northern Sardinia which will allow the island's grid to be modernized according to the expected development of renewable sources, in particular wind and photovoltaic energy, and therefore the energy decarbonization. About 30 companies and 120 workers and specialized technicians will be involved in the works.
The infrastructure will increase the resilience, sustainability, efficiency and reliability for regional electric transmission. Necessary above all for the eastern area of the island, one of the most critical due to the reduced infrastructure and the high demand for electricity by the tourist sector in the summer months.
It was the Ministry of Ecological Transition who initiated the authorization procedure for the new 150 kV power line, which winds for about 90 km partly in underground cable through 8 municipalities in northern Sardinia. In addition, the project also provides for the construction of two electric stations, in Tempio and Buddusò, which will make it possible to directly connect the three main hubs of the local electricity grid, creating a new route.
The project is part of the investments envisaged by Terna in Sardinia. In line with the new 2021-2025 Business Plan, which provides for a total of 8,9 billion euros for the development and modernization of the national electricity grid, around 1 billion euros in Sardinia alone over the next 5 years, with activities that will involve over 300 companies and 1.300 workers and technicians on construction sites and in processing at the factory.
It's not all. The interconnection between Sardinia, Corsica and the Italian peninsula and the Tyrrhenian Link, the new 3,7 billion euro submarine power line which will unite Sardinia with Sicily and the latter with Campania – as stated in a note – will allow Sardinia to play a strategic role at an international level: both with a view to the phase-out of fossil fuel power plants and therefore for the decarbonisation of the Italian energy system thanks to the development of renewable sources (in line with the objectives of the Pniec), and as an electricity hub for Europe and the Mediterranean area for market integration.
