Renewables: Enel Green Power, new record

Enel Group company again breaks its record for renewable capacity built in just one year – New capacity is expected to reduce annual CO₂ emissions by around 6,86 million tonnes

Renewables: Enel Green Power, new record

Enel Green Power increases renewable capacity in just one year. In 2020, the Enel Group company set a new record by building 3.106 MW of new renewable capacity worldwide, 77 MW more (+2,5%) than the renewable capacity built in 2019. Once fully operational, the new capacity is expected to generate approximately 11,3 TWh per year and avoid emissions into the atmosphere of about 6,86 million tons of CO₂.

The new renewable capacity includes approximately 46 plants, mainly wind (2.284 MW) and solar (803 MW). Furthermore, during the year EGP carried out the refurbishment and repowering of plants in operation for approximately 1,2 GW (250 MW wind, 847 MW hydroelectric and 73 MW geothermal).

This result is in line with the Enel Group's objective of limiting direct greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions to 148 gCO2eq/kWh in 2023, and of science-based decarbonisation for 2030, equal to an 80% reduction in direct GHG emissions compared to 2017 levels, in line with the 1,5°C scenario.

The Enel Group company dedicated to the development and operation of renewable plants around the world managed to beat this record in the year marked by the Covid-19 pandemic. During the process of building new renewable capacity, the Group has always made the protection of the health of its workers, employees and the community in which it operates a top priority.

“This milestone consolidates our position as a “Super Major” in the renewables sector – he declared Salvatore Bernabei, CEO of Enel Green Power – in fact we manage the largest private fleet in the world for the generation of renewable energy. In the near future, we will not only continue to move in this direction, but we will also accelerate our sustainable growth, in line with the Enel Group's Vision 2030, which contemplates an overall renewable capacity target of around 145 GW."
