Government reshuffle: Fontana moves to EU affairs

Conte says yes to Salvini's requests: the two Northern League ministers will be sworn in today at 18.00 at the Quirinale - Salvini collects the success of the Europeans

Government reshuffle: Fontana moves to EU affairs

“Today there are two new ministers. We are in agreement with the President of the Republic: at 18 pm we will have Minister Lorenzo Fontana sworn in at the Quirinale who will go to European Affairs and Alessandra Locatelli, currently in the Chamber of Deputies, who will have the proxies for the Family”. This is the announcement of the Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, who has fully accepted the requests received from the League. "It is a shift with the acquisition of a new minister in the government structure whose structure we complete and we will thus be able to continue government activity" he added.

The premier therefore confirmed the rumors of the last few days relating to the mini-reshuffle of the government, necessary afterwards the departure of Paolo Savona, who last March was forced to leave European affairs, having become the new president of Consob.

Lorenzo Fontana, current head of the family, was preferred to the Northern League senator Alberto Bagnai, whose name had been circulating insistently in recent days. Veronese, the new EU affairs minister knows Brussels very well, where his wife and daughter live and where in recent years he has built his network of relationships with Eurosceptic parties. A fervent Catholic, Fontana at the beginning of his mandate was at the center of controversy for his initiatives on the family - strictly "traditional" and "natural" for him - and for his words on abortion.

“I read about Conte and I heard about Salvini whom I thank for trusting my name,” commented Fontana, intercepted by reporters.

Locatelli is a Lega deputy as well as deputy mayor of Como, a member of the Social Affairs commission in the Chamber.
