Senate reform, today the showdown in the Democratic Party: Renzi proposes a compromise to the dissidents of Chiti

Indicate the senators among the regional councilors, leaving each Region the possibility of choosing the procedure. This is Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's proposal to heal the rift within the Democratic Party on the reform of Palazzo Madama.

With the aim of finding a compromise, in the morning Renzi participates in the assembly of Pd senators: about twenty of them signed an alternative bill (first signatory Vannino Chiti), which provides for the direct election of senators, in contrast with the text released by the council of ministers, which instead establishes the non-eligibility of the members of the Hall of Palazzo Madama.

“Every single Region must have a weighted weight – observed Renzi -. I claim the 21 senators appointed by Colle, but I see that they are considered a wrong idea. They obeyed an idea of Senate not only as Bundesrat but I take note of it. Furthermore, the equal composition between regions and mayors would have been a value, I would have preferred it, it would have been consistent with history. It's a point we can discuss, we can rebalance”.

In short, there is an openness to mediation, even after Renzi's meeting with Giorgio Napolitano to take stock of the course of reforms. And while the minister Maria Elena Boschi assures, despite the continuous broadsides of Silvio Berlusconi in the midst of the electoral campaign, that the pact with Forza Italia will be respected, Delrio says he is convinced that in any case the indirect election of senators "is the best guarantee for a Senate" of the autonomies.

As for the timing, according to the undersecretary “if the Italicum is delayed by a month or the reform of the Senate is postponed by one to two weeks, it's not overwhelming. It is right that there should be a discussion that enriches the text”. Two days ago Renzi himself had loosened his grip on this point, effectively renouncing the approval of the text before the European elections on 25 May.

At today's meeting the Premier is aware that if he mediates on the hypothesis he will be able to demine the group coalited behind the Chiti bill, but also overcome the resistance of the Ncd, and of the Forza Italia maldipanciasti. On Wednesday Finocchiaro and Calderoli will have to propose a basic text to the Constitutional Affairs Commission. The idea is to adopt the Government's bill by making the changes that everyone agrees on and leaving the final agreement to the amendment stage.

“I don't accept that someone calls someone who doesn't think like him authoritarian. We will make every effort until the last day to find a common point”, but “if it is not found, I am ready to take a step back. At all costs, I'm not in it: either this or I go home ”, concluded Renzi.
