Waste: maxi-fine of 40 million from the EU Court to Italy

La Court of Justice of the European Union condemns Italy to pay a millionaire fine for not having complied with the directives relating to waste in landfills. The EU Court has inflicted on Italy a lump sum fine of 40 million euros and a penalty of 42,8 million euro for each six-month delay in implementing the measures indicated by the Court itself.

In 2007, a ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union established that Italy had not complied with the obligations relating to waste management established by Community directives. With today's ruling EU Court specifies that the "closing of a landfill or covering the waste with earth and debris is not sufficient to fulfill the obligations deriving from the waste directive" and that therefore the measures to close and secure landfills "are not sufficient to comply to the directive".
