Waste: funds arrive for new plants, 60% in the Center and South

A billion and a half to the Regions that are waiting. Waste treatment plants finally take off. In a few days the decrees for the "Circular Cities" program will arrive, pillar of Italy's new eco-sustainable course. The Ministry of Ecological Transition has announced that the decrees with the project evaluation criteria will be issued on 30 September. They will cover both separate collection and recycling. It is a silent but certainly effective revolution, compared to the stoppages of the two previous governments. The consequences of those ideological blunders, unfortunately, are under the eyes of millions of citizens. Cities invaded by waste and collection service in trouble, starting with Rome Rome in the waste, another M5S flop

By making up for lost time, they look at the Europe-wide recycling targets which require 65% of waste to be recycled. “The good news – said Cingolani – is that we are setting in motion the other major line of interventions of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, the one dedicated to the circular economy. The projects will start in the next few weeks”. On the eve of important international deadlines – the PreCop 26 in Milan and the UN summit in Glasgow in November – Italy regains possession of the high-tech investments needed to structure a more sustainable country.

I60% of the investments will go to the Center-South, area always behind in collection and treatment. Thanks to the new cash injection, the situation should improve over the next two or three years. We recall that Sicily, Campania, Calabria are still grappling with landfills, although they have been outlawed for years. 30% of the organic fraction of waste will therefore be treated in the new plants to obtain energy. The thermal energy obtained will be of great help in the transition to renewables as planned in the PNRR. Moreover, the mix of sources available, especially in industry, is accompanying the economic recovery and will not stop so soon.

It would have been undiligent on the part of the executive at this stage to persevere in absurd denials. And it is clear that neither Draghi, nor Cingolani or Giovannini want to resemble their predecessors of the Conte 1 and 2 governments declared enemies of new infrastructures. The result is that more than 20% of waste ends up in landfills while there are companies ready to invest them in plants. It is no coincidence that for the government, thanks to the new decrees, it is necessary improve both the quantity and quality of what is harvested to activate circular microeconomy processes after collection. The governors will have to be good travel companions, also because the new plants will all have a low environmental impact and will also be able to handle special waste. As has been the case for a long time, outside our borders.
