Rfi (FS group) publishes the tender for the connection with the Venice airport

Italian Railway Network (RFI), controlled by the FS Italiane group, today published in the Official Journal of the European Union the call for tenders for the construction of the rail link with Marco Polo airport Venice.

The race has a value of 467 million euro, also financed with funds from the Pnrr.

“The project is aimed at providing incentives the rail modal shift of the passengers to the Venice airport and is part of the strategy of RFI and the FS group for the strengthening of railway connections with the airports, favoring intermodality and the relaunch of tourism”, the company said in a note.

Based on what is expected, the construction sites will end in time for the start of the Olympics Milan-Cortina winter season 2026. Furthermore, for the completion of the work, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility has appointed Vincenzo Macello, RFI's Investment Director, as Extraordinary Commissioner.

The details of the project

The project involves the construction of a new one double track railway line approximately 8 kilometres, of which 3,4 in tunnels, which will connect Venice to Marco Polo airport. The connection will start from the Mestre-Trieste line, will run alongside the motorway link for the airport and, in the tunnel, will arrive at Marco Polo, where it is expected the construction of a station two-track underground link connected to the airport terminal. At the station exit, a single track rejoins the surface section, allowing for a reduction in stationing times in the terminal and ensuring greater capacity for both regional and high-speed trains.
