RFI (FS group) awards maxi-tender of 2,7 billion for train supervision and control

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (FS Italiane Group) has awarded the multi-technology tender for the design and construction of the ERTMS system (European Rail Transport Management System) on the national territory. The value of the tender is a total of 2,7 billion euros.

The company communicates it with a note in which it also explains the ERTMS system. It is the "most advanced system for supervising and controlling the spacing of trains and related systems (digital station equipment and telecommunications)". The system is chosen as the common European language and in fact promotes interoperability between railway operators from different countries, improving performance and guaranteeing greater safety.

The contract was divided into four geographical macro-lots. The first Central-North lot (for 1.885 kilometers of lines) was assigned to the consortium led by Hitachi Rail STS (with ECM, Mer Mec STE, Infratech Consorzio Stabile and Atlante) for 1,3 billion. The second Central-South lot (for 1.400 km of lines) was awarded to Alstom Ferroviaria for an amount of 900 million.

The third Centro lot (for 530 kilometers of lines) was assigned to the consortium led by Mer Mec STE (with Salcef) for 323 million. The fourth southern lot (out of 405 kilometers of lines) was awarded to the consortium led by ECM (with heirs Giuseppe Mercuri, Morelli Giorgio, Esim and Guastamacchia) for an amount of 251 million.

The interventions, recalls the Rfi note, are functional to the achievement of the European objective, financed by the Pnrr, of "equipping 3.400 kilometers of network with the ERTMS system by 2026". "The awards - states Rfi - are in line with Rfi's strategic direction to accelerate the implementation of this technology throughout its network by 2036".
