Retail: the US is in charge, but the emerging are running. Italy remains at stake

Deloitte's ranking of the world's top 250 retailers certifies the US dominance (Wal-Mart in the lead) in the sector, but also the race of emerging countries, which dominate the ranking of growth rates - Italy struggles, with only three groups in ranking, held back by low margins and limited expansion abroad.

The United States still commands, but the emerging countries are elbowing behind them. We are talking about the global ranking of the major world retailers compiled by Deloitte, a ranking which, if on the one hand still certifies the market dominance of the US giants (5 among the top 10 in the 2012 sales ranking, with Wal-Mart first by distance) , on the other testifies to the growth of the sector in emerging countries.

Yes, because if we look at the ranking of revenue growth rates in the period 2007-2012 we will find no less than six groups spread across China (2), Russia (2), South Africa and Turkey, compared to three US groups and one, the first in ranking Jumbo Holding, Dutch.

The large retailers (the Deloitte ranking takes into consideration the top 250 global groups in terms of turnover) recorded total turnover of 2012 billion lire between June 2013 and June 4.287, for a growth of 4,9%, held back by low European growth.

It's Italy? Italy languishes, as often happens, recording laughable increases. The only three Italian groups present in the ranking (Coop, Coonad and Esselunga) between 2008 and today have taken a position and their total turnover, less than 40 billion euros, is equal to that of the 27th world group.

The low profitability margins and the very limited expansion abroad compared to the average of the large global groups weigh on the performance of the small Italian giants, which obtain 24,3% of their revenues from markets other than those of the country from.

Meanwhile, for the first time in the Deloitte analysis there are also web retailers, who recorded a 29% increase in revenues in the last year alone.
