Renzi relaunches Merkel as mediator between Russia and Ukraine: "Weapons and sanctions are not enough"

Matteo Renzi, the former premier and leader of Italia Viva, was the first to propose entrusting the former German Chancellor with the role of international mediator to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine and pave the way for a stable peace. Now that the hypothesis is gaining ground, he returns to us in an interview the Republic in which he condemns the Russian aggression without ifs and buts but advocates dialogue and a leap in quality in the negotiations that goes beyond the belligerents and calls into the field a personality of great authority such as Angela Merkel

Sending weapons to Ukraine and adopting sanctions against Russia, Renzi argues, "serve as gestures of solidarity but not to win the war that ends with the negotiations and not with tweets”. But woe to settle down on a superficial reading of what is happening. “Putin is immoral but not moody and he hasn't suddenly gone mad: he is changing the geography of the world, shifting the center of gravity to the East and challenging Europe because it has a pact with China, India and many African countries. This is why the reaction must be political” and “a leap in quality also in Brussels is needed”.

According to the former prime minister, “Nato and the EU must find a unified response, otherwise the new world geopolitical order will cut us off long". Renzi does not deny mistakes and responsibilities of the West but warns that confusion must not be made and Putin's Russia's aggression against Ukraine cannot be equated with the delays or lack of foresight of the West. And he adds: “I think the decisive push for Putin came from American debacle in Afghanistan. After Syria 2013 came Crimea 2014, after Kabul 2021 came Ukraine 2022. Putin plans, not improvises”. It is necessary to stop it a qualitative leap of the West at the highest level that goes far beyond the sterile direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
