Renzi: "Building a political Europe" but Dombrovskis: "Credible measures or Grexit"

While Italy is looking for a third way that combines rigor and fairness, “values and not just numbers”, the EU vice-president puts the brakes on entering the Eurogroup: “Rebuild trust. Without a package of credible proposals, Greece's exit cannot be ruled out."

Renzi: "Building a political Europe" but Dombrovskis: "Credible measures or Grexit"

"There is an emergency in Greece, but there is an even bigger problem: what Europe do we want to do". This was stated by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, speaking today on the occasion of his visit to CERN in Geneva and before going to Brussels for tonight's Eurosummit. “The Greece we are facing is an emergency – he reiterated – that we will have to face, but the Europe we want to build is made up of intelligence, passion and must be a political Europe, not just an economic one”. For the premier "Europe must be a continent where there are not only numbers and figures but values".

If Italy therefore tries to push for a third way that manages to combine the rigor demanded by Germany and the countries of Northern Europe and the fairness claimed by the Greek government, there are those within the European council who are far more intransigent. And the vice president of the EU Commission does not rule out a Grexit: “Greece is facing a dramatic situation, time has been lost, opportunities have been lost now we need a clear, credible strategy on the part of the Greeks to understand how they want to get out of the crisis and regain financial stability". “It is necessary to restore – he continued – the trust among the 19 democracies of the euro: Grexit is certainly not our goal, we are working towards a positive scenario, but if trust is not rebuilt, if there is not a package of proposals, credible measures, Grexit cannot be ruled out”.
