Renzi: anti-ISIS coalition open to Russia on Syria

The premier Matteo Renzi, interviewed by SkyTg24, commented on the recent events in Paris and the reaction of the international community to defeat terrorism: “The issue is very complex: a balance must be found. Those who say: 'now is the time for security, let's give up everything' are exaggerating. We must live, with our values and with the courage not to lock ourselves up. Terrorists want to kill us and if they can't, they try to make us live the way they want. We must not give up our identity”.

Renzi recalled the central role of intelligence, even before the military intervention, and opened up to the involvement of Vladimir Putin's Russia: "The Cold War is over, it would be absurd to still think of a divided world as it was then: the anti-Isis coalition must open up to Russia regarding the intervention in Syria“. "We don't want a second Libya - the premier also said -, we are already paying for the consequences of what happened in Libya", also warned the Prime Minister in claiming a renewed leading role for Italy in the most delicate international affairs. “Italy is once again a protagonist on the international political scene: it has returned to the table in Vienna after failing to reach an agreement on Iran. We have Federica Mogherini as EU Foreign Minister and Filippo Grandi who has just been appointed as head of the UNHCR. Even to identify Jihadi John, the executioner of ISIS, Italy collaborated with its men, when it was clear that the executioner was that man, it was also clear for the work that Italy did".

With regard to spending to fight terrorism and the fact that they are considered outside the Stability Pact has just arrived today the opening of the president of the EU Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, who hinted that the derogation will also apply to other countries and not just France. “It has been our proposal for some time. What is true for France is also true for Italy – said Renzi -. We were then told no, arguing that this was an exaggerated proposition. Now things change, but I think it's a right, sacrosanct fact. The opposite would be absurd."

“The 2016 Stability Law – added Renzi – already had more money than 2015 on security. In the next 15 days we will check if we can put more money. Next week I will make a proposal to everyone for a further investment not only of security but also of recovery of certain realities”.
