Renzi at the Quirinale, an hour from Mattarella

The premier Matteo Renzi this morning he went to the Quirinale where he had a conversation of over an hour with the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. This was announced by sources close to the Prime Minister, who have revealed nothing, however, on the content of the dialogue with Mattarella, except that the premier's resignation is irrevocable.

Renzi will meet the council of ministers this afternoon and will then return to the Quirinale to formalize his resignation, announced during the night after the referendum debacle became clear. Meanwhile, we are already thinking about what will come next: the President of the Republic Mattarella is at the center of the scene, who has to deal, on the one hand, with the request of the opposition to go to early elections, and, on the other , with the fact that the largest parliamentary group currently is still the one attributable to the Democratic Party.

In any case, it will be necessary to find a man who will attempt to lead this legislature at least until the spring of 2017. The names circulating the most in these hours are those of the Minister of the Economy Pier Carlo Padoan or to the Minister of Cultural Heritage Dario Franceschini. Behind them is also the name of an institutional figure such as the president of the Senate Pietro Grasso.
