Renzi to M5S: "Ok preferences, but compromise is needed"

During the meeting between the government delegation led by Matteo Renzi and the M5S delegation, the prime minister opened up to some of the grillini's proposals: "Agree on multiple preferences and candidacies, but agreement is also needed with the other political forces" – “Constitutional reform? Closer than you think."

Renzi to M5S: "Ok preferences, but compromise is needed"

Yes to preferences and no to multiple candidates, but we need a compromise acceptable to most political forces. this is Matteo Renzi's vision in the face of the requests of the 5 Star Movement: “An agreement has been reached on the Italicum which does not provide for preferences, so much so that we said: we run the primaries. There is also the hypothesis of primaries regulated by law. I'm not very convinced of this system, because it has a cost for the State… If I had to choose between preferences and primary taxes imposed by law, I personally would be in favor of preferences. We take note that you are available…”.

There are more than one contact points, but, as mentioned, different needs and wishes must also be taken into account. With regard to multiple candidacies, Renzi, again in the meeting with the M5S delegation, said: “It is a rule that we have put in place, even though we are committed as Pd not to make them. It is a rule that the small parties have asked us for, we understand your request and we are submitting it to debate with the other parties. I understand that a party that does not see its candidate taking action everywhere may have concerns… It was born with that spirit of compromise that also applies to others. If we are for the compromise with the 5 stars, with whoever you want, it is clear that we must put all the questions. I don't agree on multiple candidacies but I understand the philosophy, they, Ncd, accept an electoral law that penalizes them in some respects and ask for an exchange on other issues".

Also as regards the proposal for a double round of lists in the elections, the prime minister stalls: "We note that it is not the central point, we try to combine governance and representativeness". For the secretary of the Democratic Party, in any case, the issue must be proposed to the party before being discussed. The point, as far as the electoral law is concerned, remains the same for Matteo Renzi who considers various points of the proposal acceptable or acceptable, but seeks a majority that takes into consideration the needs of all the other parties.

On the constitutional reform front, however, after referring to the definition of "sloth" given to him on Beppe Grillo's blog, he wanted to underline the closeness between his ideas and that of the 5-star movement: "I don't think we are that far away", giving the example of some points of contact between the two visions: the overcoming of bicameralism, the greater clarity of the State-Regions relations and the first and second level senators. The meeting ended with a general agreement on the issues to be brought to the attention of the other parties and with the intention of meeting again before bringing the law to the Senate.
