Italy is last in the European rental ranking, with an average cost for a two-room apartment of 1.400 euros, a figure which for many exceeds half their salary.

Florence, Milan and Rome are increasingly expensive, especially for those looking for one House for rent. This is what can be seen from the liveability index calculated by the N26 online bank with the aim of identifying the European countries that offer a better quality of life. The study focuses on the impact of the increase in the cost of living and, in particular, the high-rent, has on the ways Europeans spend and save and on how much this impact weighs in the evaluation of the attractiveness of a country.

The ranking considers the rent and electricity expenses that citizens face, as well as population density and residents' overall sense of happiness. Among the various costs analyzed to define the ranking of the most livable countries in Europe, therefore, those relating to rent are of particular importance, especially if analyzed in relation to the average amount of salaries.

In Italy more than half of the salary is used to pay the rent.

According to N26 data, Italy ranks last in the ranking with focus on rents: the high rent situation in our country has a significant impact on the monthly salaries of Italians, among the lowest in Europe. In fact, based on the data, over 52% of the salary goes towards rent, the highest percentage among European countries, considering the national average of the cost of rent for a two-room apartment, which is around 1.400 euro.

Preceding Italy among European countries is the Spain, with an average monthly rental price of 1.377 euros, followed by i Netherlands (approximately 1.620 euros) and from UK with (1.460 euros) per month. In these countries the percentages of salary to be allocated to rent are lower, respectively 45% for Spain and 37% for the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

In first place in the ranking we find the Belgium, where the rent of a two-room apartment costs around 800 euros per month: here the inhabitants allocate only 18% of their salary to this expense. They occupy second and third place Switzerland e Denmark, where on average 1.733% of your monthly salary is allocated for a two-room apartment that costs 1.159 euros and 21 euros respectively.

Florence is the most expensive city ahead of Rome and Milan

Surprisingly it is Florence the most expensive city, with an average monthly rental cost of 1.806 euros, with peaks of 2.200 euros for the historic center. 

It takes second place Milano, with an average of 1.674 euros per month. However, the Lombard capital returns to the top if we consider the highest peak in costs for two-room apartments in the historic centre, with around 2.838 euros per month. 

Third in the standings Roma, whose average rental cost for a two-room apartment is below average, with a price of 1.200 euros.
