Rehn, Greek default would be a tragedy for the Eurozone

The chorus of voices opposing a possible Greek default is growing. This morning the European Commissioner for Economic Affairs, Olli Rehn, made himself heard, arguing before the European Parliament that "a bankruptcy of Athens or its exit from the euro area would have dramatic economic, social and political consequences, I am not Greece, but also for all the countries of the euro area, for the European Union and for our global partners. It is absolutely certain”. France also intervened to reassure the markets: the President of the Republic Nicolas Sarkozy and the Prime Minister Francois Fillon reaffirmed their willingness to "do whatever is necessary to save Greece".

Rehn's words come shortly after the alarm raised by Jacek Rostowski, the finance minister of Poland, which currently holds the presidency of the EU. “Europe is in danger – said Rostowski in front of the assembly in Strasbourg – If the euro zone breaks up, the European Union will not be able to survive, with all the consequences one can imagine”. If the crisis "lasts for another year or two, we will need to prepare ourselves to face an unemployment rate that could be twice as high in some countries, including the richest ones".
