More judicial troubles in the Pirellone. Dominic Zambetti, exponent of the Pdl and councilor for the House of the Lobardia Region, was arrested this morning on vote swapping charges. Investigators believe he has paid 200 euros to the 'Ndrangheta to buy 4.000 votes.
The number one of the Region, Robert Formigoni, immediately ruled out that the arrest of a member of his council could push him to resign from the presidency: "These are extremely serious accusations - he said -, but they concern councilor Zambetti, who has already been relieved of his office".
The order signed by investigating judge Alessandro Santangelo concerns not only Zambetti but also Ambrogio Crespi, younger brother of Luigi, a former pollster favored by Silvio Berlusconi. Just Crespi, according to the indictment, would have raked in the votes in the suburban districts of Milan thanks to his numerous contacts with organized crime.
Zambetti is the thirteenth regional councilor out of 80 of the current assembly to end up under investigation. He is also the fifth councilor of the various Formigoni juntas to be arrested. Before him the same fate had befallen Guido Bombarda (Professional Training), Piergianni Prosperini (Tourism), Franco Nicoli Cristiani (Environment, Commerce) and Massimo Ponzoni (Civil Protection, Environment).
