Gift from Facebook: 6 months of free antivirus to fight spam

Social life, but not only. From now Facebook is also concerned with security. The plan is to set up an online market where brand new antivirus software can be downloaded. On the digital shelves of the "Marketplace" you can buy free licenses of variable duration six months to a year, depending on the program. To set up the new project, His Majesty Mark Zuckerberg has entered into agreements with five global big names in the sector: Symantec, Mcafee, Trend Micro, Sophos and Microsoft.

However, this is not disinterested philanthropy, On the contrary. In reality, the gimmick hides yet another metamorphosis from Apple-era computer science: antiviruses are essentially transformed into applications that are inseparable from the world of Facebook. The protection guaranteed by these software will be valid only as long as users entertain themselves in the domain of the social network. In essence, it is an anti-spam shield.

Once you leave the site, though, you are thrown back into the malware jungle. At the mercy of the bad guys, unless you already have active protection on your computer. In short, the antivirus offered by Facebook will not replace what you need every day at all.

The sole purpose of the “Marketplace” is therefore to reduce the proliferation of spam on bulletin boards, which today represents 4% of shared content. But sailing towards the billion users, Facebook will inevitably remain the favorite hunting ground of those who, for work or for pleasure, program cyber attacks. The battle doesn't look set to end anytime soon.
