Let's face it: it is difficult for Matteo Salvini and Giorgia Meloni to say something wise in politics but for once it is impossible to blame them. Gathered in Silvio Berlusconi's former Milan residence, they took a sort of Pontida oath with the leader of Forza Italia: all united for the NO to the referendum on constitutional reform and never, ever with Renzi. And away with pats on the back, smiles (which they hadn't exchanged for months), tea and pastries.
But then the moods of the guests suddenly changed. It was when Berlusconi revealed that he had chosen the former president of the Senate, Renato Schifani, who distinguished himself as a commuter between Forza Italia and Ncd and again Forza Italia, in the role of right-wing spokesman for the No in the next referendum campaign.
But how? Salvini and Meloni asked themselves disconsolately: dear Silvio, don't you remember that in Parliament Schifani voted for Renzi's constitutional reform three times? Does it seem the most credible to you to be the spokesman of the right for the NO?
However, when it comes to lying even to himself supporting the impossible Berlusconi, you know, is legendary. Why Schifani spokesperson for NO? Simple, explains the former Knight: for two reasons, one more brilliant than the other. The first is that, in Berlusconi's vision, the former president of the Senate can win moderate center and right-wing votes for No. But the genius is the second when "the leader of FI - writes the Corriere della Sera - has also claimed the symbolic value of the former president of the Senate's change of opinion". Of course it is the adjective "symbolic" that makes the difference.
It seems that Salvini and Meloni came out a bit perplexed by the Milanese meeting of the past. For once they deserve solidarity.
