After three centuries of forced coexistence with their English cousins, the Scots are now one step away from secession. According to a survey conducted by YouGov for the Sunday Times and published yesterday, less than two weeks after the referendum of 18 September, the secessionists have more than made up for the initial gap and are now ahead of the unionists, albeit by a small amount (51 against 49% ). It is the first time that a survey has revealed a percentage in favor of the split.
The uncertainty of the outcome unleashed political panic in London, to the point that the British government went so far as to offer the transfer of greater powers to Scotland in case of rejection of the independence cause.
"In the coming days - announced yesterday George Osborne, British Finance Minister - an action plan will arrive that will grant greater powers to Scotland, more powers over taxes, spending and welfare". Then, however, a warning: “If Scotland opts for independence – thundered Osborne -, under no circumstances will it be able to use the pound”.
