Referendum: discounts of up to 70% for those traveling by train and by plane

The law does not provide for the possibility for those who live far from their municipality of residence to vote in their city of residence. Off-site voters who intend to "go home" to vote, however, will be able to take advantage of the asubsidies provided by the main rail, air and sea transport companies.

Below, in detail, the discounts provided, how to obtain them and the precautions to take.

REFERENDUM: DISCOUNTS ON TRAINS

Trenitalia, Italo and Trenord have established concessions for voters who have to return to their municipality of residence to exercise their right to vote.

For Trenitalia, the company has provided discounts for "round trips in 2nd class for all trains of the national service and for the Standard level of Frecciarossa". The reductions reach 70% of the basic price "for medium-long distance national trains (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, Intercity and IntercityNotte) and couchette service" and 60% 60% on tickets for regional trains.

In order to take advantage of the discounts, voters must make the outward journey starting from the tenth day before the return journey until midnight on the tenth day following the voting day (24 December therefore).

There are also rules to be respected: to take advantage of the discounts, voters must show the following documents at the ticket offices and authorized travel agencies:

- identity document;

– document/electoral card;

– stamping of the electoral card certifying that the vote has taken place, for the return trip.

“These documents – reads the website – together with the tickets for the outward and return journeys, must be presented to the crew”.

Also Italo provides travel discounts of up to 60% for those who buy a ticket by 13 December to reach their municipality of residence and vote.

As stated on the website, “the discount is valid on the Flex and Economy offers, in the Smart and Comfort environments. Anyone wishing to use them must call Pronto Italo on 06.07.08, and purchase an individual "round trip" ticket. One-way or cumulative tickets do not benefit from the discount.

In this case, it is mandatory for voters to bring their own identity document and electoral card or a special substitute declaration for the outward journey; while for the return trip the identity document and the electoral card with the stamp of the occurred vote must be shown.

Trenord finally, it provides for a 60% reduction on the Lombardy regional tariffs.

REFERENDUM: DISCOUNTS ON AIRLINES

As far as air transport is concerned, the only company that has provided discounts for those who have to reach their municipality of residence for the referendum is Alitalia.

Voters who choose the former national airline will be able to take advantage of a discount on the plane ticket used to travel to the polling station.

On domestic flights, the reduction is 40% on the base price of the return ticket, excluding taxes.

To access the discount, voters must show their electoral card at the time of check-in and boarding. Upon return, the passenger must show the airport staff their electoral card duly stamped and dated by the Electoral Section which proves that the vote was taken.

REFERENDUM: DISCOUNTS ON FERRY

Speaking instead of the concessions provided for those traveling by sea, Tirrenia provides a 60% discount on the ordinary rate for residents of Sardinia, Sicily and Puglia who will have to go home to vote. Tickets must be purchased at the Company's ticket offices.

The concession is valid for trips made from the tenth day before the elections to the tenth day after.

The voter must present his electoral card (which must be stamped on the return trip) and his identification document.
