Referendum, Padoan does not go to the Europgroup

The economy minister will be replaced by the director general of the Treasury Vincenzo La Via – Obligatory choice after Renzi's resignation: Padoan is also one of the candidates to succeed the resigning premier in the event of the formation of a lightning government.

Pier Carlo Padoan he canceled his trip to Brussels and will not participate in today's Eurogroup meeting and tomorrow's Ecofin meeting. This was announced by a spokesman for the Ministry of Economy: Padoan's choice, of course, is linked to the result of the constitutional referendum and the consequent resignation of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. Instead of him, the director general of the Treasury Vincenzo La Via will participate in the meeting.

Furthermore, Padoan's name is also one of those who fall within the shortlist of possible candidates to succeed Renzi in the event that the President of the Republic decides to form a lightning government.

In any case, the absence of the Economy Minister from the Brussels table risks penalizing Italy in the difficult negotiations with Europe regarding the decimal points for exceeding the planned deficit, even if the maneuver has already been approved by the Chamber. Between the Italian maneuver and the figures indicated by the Commission, there would be around 5 billion. The balance could best be negotiated in the event of institutional and government continuity acceptable to Europe.

Meanwhile, the first statements on the results of the Referendum are coming from Brussels The Commissioner for Economic Affairs Pierre Moscovici, upon joining the Eurogroup, admits that "we have all been touched by the outcome of the referendum". Even if Renzi chose to resign, he added, “I mean that he was a good premier who made important social and economic reforms. We have faith in the Italian authorities, it is a solid country we can count on".
