Il Equal Committee! ha filed in the Supreme Court a proposal di referendum for amend the Cirinnà Law (76/2016) and ensure equal rights non-heterosexual or queer couples. The proposal is based on the principle of equality established by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Italian Constitution.
The initiative of Uguali!
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between civil unions and marriage by extending fundamental rights such as joint adoption, inheritance and survivor's pension, which are currently denied to these couples.
The presentation – attended by Fabio Canino, Emanuele Pepe, Sonny Olumati and Daniela Ionita – reaffirmed the commitment to equality and dignity for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation.
“We live in an era of dismantling of social rights, which also drags down civil rights – he declared Francesca Romana D'Antuono, co-president of Volt Europa –. With this referendum we want to reverse the trend: rebuild a social pact based on equal dignity, recognition and protection for all. It is a first step towards a truly equal society, where no love is invisible”.
Luca Pugliese, president of the Uguali! committee added: “We can no longer accept citizens of series A and series B. Civil unions represent an outdated compromise. It is time to legally recognize every emotional bond, without exceptions. Italy cannot wait any longer”.
