In 2020 the economic crisis caused by the Covid has brought down the incomes of the North with a violence ten times higher than the registered one to the south. The decline in the taxable income, in fact, was equal to 1,45% in the northern part of the country (at 23.828 euros), versus -0,15% instead recorded in the South (at 17.256 euros). The numbers are contained in an article published on Tuesday in Sun 24 Hours, which cites as a source the open data on tax returns 2021 recently published by the Department of Finance of the Ministry of Economy.

Taxable income 2020: the performance of the Regions

Regionally, the most significant falls were in Toscana (-1,96%), Lombardia (-1,75%) And Valle d'Aosta (-1,74%). Bad too Veneto (-1,62%), Liguria (-1,36%), Piemonte (-1,29%) ed Emilia Romagna (-1,13%). On the contrary, per capita income has even increased in Abruzzo, Molise, Puglia, Basilicata e Calabria.

How do you explain so many differences?

This heterogeneous trend is explained by the different impact of the pandemic containment measures. The closures, in fact, have weighed above all on the incomes of self-employed and private sector employees, while leaving almost unchanged i retirement income and those of public workers.

A look at the Municipalities

As far as the individual Municipalities are concerned, the cities of art suffer the most significant drops, among which the -4,36% of Venezia, a figure four times worse than the national average. This is the heaviest collapse among large cities, followed by -1,98%. Florence.

If we also broaden our gaze to smaller towns, however, the worst figure is by far the -35,3% of Positano, followed at some distance by -21% of Limone sul Garda.

However, there are also 54 capital cities that closed 2020 with an increase in taxable income compared to 2019. These are medium-small cities, almost all in the South. Among these, the best figure is the +1,69% recorded in Campobasso.
