Income: 26% of Italians under 10.000 euros

Italy divided in two, both in terms of per capita GDP (in the South it is half that in the North) and in terms of income distribution. Here is what emerges from the Istat analysis on the regional economic accounts published today: a quarter of Italians' incomes are under 10 euros, while less than 3 out of 100 exceed 70.

In 2012 "over half of individual gross incomes (54%)" was between 10.001 and 30.000 euros per year, 25,8% was under 10.001 and 17,6% was between 30.001 and 70.000. Only 2,4% exceed 70.000 euros», reads the statement released by the statistical institute.

More than half of self-employed workers (55,6%) have a gross income (net of social security contributions) of less than 15 euros. In detail, 40,3% is under 40 thousand, while 15,3% is between 10 and 15 thousand euros per year.

The tax wedge soared to 46,7%. In other words, the average cost of dependent labour, gross of taxes and social security contributions, is 30.953 euros per year. The worker, in the form of net remuneration, receives just over half (53,3%), or 16.498 euros.

Per capita wealth confirms a country divided in two: in the South it is half that in the North. The South, with a per capita GDP of 17,2 thousand euros, presents "a very large negative differential", observes Istat, with the rest of the country: its level is 45,8% lower, therefore almost halved, compared to that of the Centre-North, Istat still notes, distributing the data for 2013, updated according to the new system of accounts (Sec 2010).

The GDP per inhabitant in 2013 was, in fact, equal to 33,5 thousand euros in the North-West, 31,4 thousand euros in the North-East and 29,4 thousand euros in the Centre. Compared to 2011 there was a reduction in all Italian regions, with the exception of Bolzano and Campania.
