Recovery Fund and Mes: Conte is increasingly in the balance

High voltage days for the Conte government 2. Sunday Italia Viva has screwed up the task project perhaps conceived by the premier to manage the Recovery Fund and forced Giuseppe Conte to hastily back down. Today the project which provides for the management of the 209 billion euros arriving from Europe is centered on Palazzo Chigi with the contribution of 6 super managers and 300 consultants it was only illustrated, but not put to the vote of the Council of Ministers, also because the meeting was suspended after the interior minister Lamorgese was suddenly positive for Covid. The move by Renzian group leaders Rosato and Boschi, who controversially abandoned the meeting of the majority on the task force, caught Conte off guard and opened a new fracture in an increasingly shaky coalition that on Wednesday he will have to face Parliament's test of fire on the reform of the Mes.

In theory, the breakdown of the Recovery task force does not herald the government crisis, as he explained in an interview with Republic Matteo Renzi, but it certainly weakens Conte and puts him against the wall on the eve of crucial appointments in Italy and Europe. “The task force – argued the leader of Italia Viva – is useless and does not reconcile with the reckless declarations of the premier according to which the current ministers are the best that can be found. We do not accept these contemptuous methods of government but we are committed to supporting the Conte 2 government until the budget law is approved. Then it will depend on Conte: if he is able to make a leap in quality, he will continue ”, otherwise he will move on.

But in addition to the tough confrontation with the Renzians on the governance of the Recovery Fund, Conte must pass under the gauntlet of Parliament, where on Wednesday we will vote on the reform of the Mes that splits the Five Stars and risks putting the majority in doubt, especially in the Senate. The grillino leader Luigi Di Maio is busy, belly down, to deflate the internal frond of the Five Stars and could succeed, but the votes in Parliament are always at risk when the numbers shaky. There is no joking about the reform of the Mes and the use of the 37 billion health fund and the secretary of the Democratic Party, Nicola Zingaretti, said it clearly to Prime Minister Conte, also pressing him on the correct and rapid management of the Recovery Fund: "We cannot get away with it". Conte knows it but it will be necessary to see if he will be able to get out of the ambiguities that have characterized his premiership so far.
