Report by the NGO Oxfam: 1% of the world's population owns half of the wealth

The crisis, in addition to increasing poverty, has had among its effects also that of exacerbating disparities in the distribution of wealth. On the eve of the Davos Forum, which will also deal with this issue, a report by the NGO Oxfam (Oxford Commitee for Famine Relief) stated that by now half of the wealth produced worldwide is held by just 1% of the world's population.

Not only that: this 1% of privileged people even saw their assets grow during the years of the recession (more generally from 1980 to 2012), and the richest 85 people alone hold as much as the poorest half of the global population, i.e. by more than 3 billion people.

According to the report of the confederation of 17 non-governmental organizations operating in 100 countries, economic inequality is now distributed in almost all countries: seven out of ten people live in states where inequality has increased over the past 30 years.
