ABI report: Italian banks are reviewing profits but their profitability remains low

Italian banks return to make profits but their profitability remains unsatisfactory. Over the next three years, the banks will record net profits of 19,4 billion in total, according to what emerges from the Afo report produced by the ABI's economic analysis office together with the research offices of the main Italian banks. The report reports 2,9 billion in profits this year (after the 'red' of 22,3 billion in 2013), another 6,7 billion net in 2015 and a 2016 with almost 10 billion in net profits.

Despite the numbers, the report points out that the profitability of banks (roe) should be on average equal to 1,7% "not only very far from pre-crisis levels, but also from the low values reached in the first three years of the crisis". In the opinion of the ABI "the insufficient profitability perspective, determined by the persistently high weight of the cost of risk and by a low trend in revenues, continues to call for further efforts to improve efficiency on the cost side".
