The Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, has asked the governor of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, to give up "as soon as possible" his plan to unilaterally declare independence, stating that this is "the best solution" as well as the one that " will avoid greater damage. In an interview with the Efe agency, Rajoy said: “Is there a solution? Yes, the best is the quick return to legality and the affirmation in the shortest possible time that there will be no unilateral declaration of independence, because in this way greater damages will be avoided”.
"In this way, greater damage can be avoided in the future, this is what is being asked by the whole of society, by media editorials, by entrepreneurs, by unions and by millions of Catalans," Rajoy continued.
