Raphael, the "sensitive genius" documentary aired today on RAI 3

Raffaello. The sensitive genius" is the documentary promoted by the Marche Region, produced by Sydonia Production and which will be broadcast on RAI 3, on April 5, 2020, at 23.50 pm, at the stroke of midnight, to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of Raffaello Sanzio. Directed by Luca Trovellesi Cesana, the screenplay by Claudio Centioni and the scientific advice of Luca Tomìo, the documentary also makes use of the extraordinary participation of Achille Bonito Oliva, which gives the figure of Raphael an update and a comparison with great artists such as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Giorgio De Chirico and Giulio Paolini, who participates in the documentary in an unedited and original form.

The very dynamic narration is entrusted to the young art historian Luca Tomìo, who takes viewers on a journey not only through Raphael's works but through places, even secret, unpublished and evocative, which have been fundamental stages in his human and creative journey: childhood in Urbino, youth in Perugia and Umbria, maturity in Florence and the triumph in Rome of Pope Julius II.

To narrate Raphael's global fame, it was decided to develop a focus on his works conserved at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, just as Milan was chosen in Italy to document how the two masterpieces by Raphael conserved in the city, the Marriage of the Virgin in Brera and the cartoon for the School of Athens benefit from very innovative installations, such as those of Leonardo and Michelangelo at the Castello Sforzesco.

In Florence, in addition to the works preserved in the Uffizi and Palazzo Pitti, the narrative itinerary unfolds to discover the family and private palaces that facilitated the rise of Raphael, the Doni, the Taddei, the Pandolfini but also those that make up the great of the city, from Palazzo Gondi to Palazzo Corsini, where the only work still in Raphael's private collection, the cartoon for the portrait of Pope Julius II, was exceptionally documented.

In Rome, in addition to the numerous and well-known works preserved in the city museums and in the Vatican, which document the activity of Raphael as a painter, the narrative itinerary also unfolds through the knowledge of the archaeological wonders of the Eternal City, of which the artist had been appointed first superintendent, and of the Renaissance ones concocted by Raphael himself and his mentor Donato Bramante, even the most misunderstood ones, such as the church of Sant'Eligio degli Orefici.

In Umbria, in addition to the well-known works, two new attributions to the young Raphael were witnessed during the filming of the documentary, the Crucifixion in the Oratory of Sant'Agostino in Perugia and the Corpus Domini standard in the Diocesan Museum of Gubbio, contributing largely to the clarification of the creative path of the young man from Urbino in the training phase, which also includes Pinturicchio's Cappella Bella in Spello.
Vivid theatrical representations have been inserted to dramatically highlight the salient moments of Raphael's life, such as the death of his father, or that of contemporary history, such as the bloody Red Wedding of the Baglioni, among other things set in the gloomy recesses of the time still preserved in the underground of the Rocca Paolina in Perugia.
