Waste oil collection, Terna-Conou alliance

Mineral and synthetic oils are used as insulation between cables and pylons: to avoid their dispersion they are collected by a consortium and 99% recycled.

Waste oil collection, Terna-Conou alliance

There is a national consortium for the collection and treatment of mineral and synthetic oils, such as those used by "liquid" insulators in electrical infrastructures (for example to prevent a pylon from being electrified by the cable it supports): its name is Conou and it has just started a collaboration with it Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid. With a view to the development of environmental sustainability and the circular economy, the two entities are therefore committed to a joint action program to recover the oils used in the various Terna sites in the area, avoiding their dispersion in the environment.

With this agreement, in line with its strategic objectives, Terna strengthens its own commitment to the disposal of industrial waste, helping to favor an even more correct collection of mineral oils and facilitating their collection by companies selected and certified by Conou. The consortium's activity is subject to Terna's monitoring and analysis, which will certify the recoverability of the oils for regeneration or other uses, in compliance with current regulations on waste management, and also thanks to a reciprocal continuous exchange of information and detailed reports on the services and quantities of oil treated.

Already today, explains a joint note, most of the oils used in Terna's various activities are correctly treated and destined for regeneration: this agreement will make it possible to standardize and make the virtuous process undertaken by the company led by Stefano Donnarumma this years. Among the collaboration actions envisaged in the agreement, Terna and Conou will also organize specific dedicated meetings e training sessions in the area with a view to promoting widespread environmental awareness.

The agreement is particularly significant if one considers that Terna currently manages over 74.000 km of high and very high voltage electricity grid, 888 stations and 736 transformers through 4 control centers on the Italian territory, and that therefore insulating oils are widely used. On Conou's side, the priority is collect "to the last drop" of used oil, but also that it is "of quality" in order to guarantee its regeneration. For this reason, the consortium, founded in 1984 and which every year collects about 190.000 tons of used oils, 99% sending them for regeneration, has long since launched an integrated program of communication and awareness-raising activities aimed at the industrial sector, to offer a correct information to companies on all waste management methods.
