Prysmian: order worth 250 million in the North Sea

Prysmian Group awarded a 250 million contract in the North Sea. The group, active in the energy and telecommunications cable systems sector, announces that it has obtained the order from the Dutch and German electricity grid operator TenneT, for the connection of offshore wind farms, located in the North Sea, to the German mainland.

The project, explains a note, involves the supply, installation and testing of a cable connection with high voltage extruded insulation in direct current of 320 kV and with a power of 900 Mw, and related fiber cable system optics, along a route of 29 km for the land portion and 130 km for the submarine portion. The cable system will connect the onshore converter station at the Emden Ost power substation in Lower Saxony with the BorWin offshore converter platform, located approximately 120 km north of the German coast.

The BorWin3 project will be implemented using cables produced in the group's centers of technological and manufacturing excellence located in Pikkala (Finland) and Gron (France), and its execution will be coordinated from Prysmian's new Hamburg offices.

The installation of the submarine cables will also be carried out with the support of the DP2 Cable Enterprise cable layer, currently being modernized in order to maximize the specific experience already gained in the connections of offshore wind farms in the North Sea in order to better serve the growing markets of Northern Europe, and providing solutions for installations of great complexity.

Completion of the installation of the Hvdc cable system is scheduled for October 2017. The cables will be installed in natural areas of great environmental value both on land and at sea – among these the estuary of the river Ems. This is the second DC interconnection built by TenneT to follow this route (which runs in parallel with that of the DolWin3 project that the Group was awarded last year), and underlines Prysmian's ability to offer tailor-made installation solutions that meet customer specifications and requirements in conjunction with particularly stringent environmental standards.
