Prysmian, the Sardinia-mainland Italy submarine connection turns 50

The group active in the cable systems and telecommunications sector will focus on innovation and the efficient and sustainable use of energy resources

Prysmian Group, one of the world leaders in the energy and telecommunications cable systems sector, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the HVDC submarine cable system created for the SA.CO.I. which connects the electricity grid of Sardinia to mainland Italy.

This is the longest operating HVDC submarine link in the world. “It is an important anniversary because it testifies to the absolute reliability, efficiency and effectiveness of the technology of our submarine cables” explains Massimo Battaini, Senior Vice President Energy Projects Prysmian Group.

“The ever more efficient and sustainable use of energy resources passes through the modernization and development of electricity grids. The technologies and services that Prysmian is able to offer to utilities and network operators are proving to be increasingly central also in terms of reducing plant construction and operating costs” added Massimo Battaini.

When it was built, the submarine power link SA.CO.I. was a source of pride both in terms of installed capacity (300 MW) and sea depth reached (450 metres). The 120 km of 200 kV submarine cable to connect Sulcis in Sardinia with Corsica and Tuscany were produced in the Arco Felice plant (Naples), one of the Group's centers of manufacturing and technological excellence.

After 50 years of activity, the SA.CO.I. continues to represent an important energy connection between Sardinia and Italy.

“For the future we are focusing more and more on technological innovation and on the ability to offer our customers complete and “turnkey” projects, developed according to their needs. The innovation guidelines in which we are investing will lead us to cable systems with higher transmission capacities, greater use of highly performing and environmentally sustainable materials, the use of cutting-edge technologies and excellent know-how for provide intelligent systems for managing and monitoring networks, as well as upgraded equipment and advanced services for cable installation and maintenance” concluded Battaini.
