Prysmian conquers Brazil. The world leader in energy telecom cables and systems, born in 2005 from the ashes of Pirelli Cavi and listed on the Stock Exchange since 2007, has obtained an order for the supply of over 1.200 km of telecom cables with high Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) technology from Tim Celular Brazil (subsidiary of TIM Brasile SA).

The cables will be installed on the important transmission line Tucuruì–Macapà –Manaus in view of the Line-Transmission Amazonas project for the infrastructural renewal of the country. The Tucuruì-Macapà-Manaus line, also known as "The Big Line" and positioned on the left margin of the Amazon River, is over 1.800 km long and was created with the aim of integrating the electricity system of the northern region of the country by connecting the capitals of Amazonia and Amapà to the second largest hydroelectric plant in Brazil located in Tucuruì.

The interconnection will consist of seven transmission lines and eight substations for one total investment of over 1.200 million euros. The OPGW overhead cables, built for this project in the Brazilian factory of Sorocaba with 36 optical fibers inside, have the dual function of protecting the transmission line from lightning and representing an excellent means of transmission for images, voice, internet and data high speed. The Brazilian order confirms the Prysmian Group's leadership position in telecommunications network integration projects on high voltage overhead lines with OPGW technology.

In this sector the Group has installed over 1983 km of cables worldwide since 175.000, giving guarantees in terms of product performance and reliability in the long term, in the most varied types of environment. Prysmian Group is the world leader in the sector of optical cables for telecommunications. The Business Telecom represents 18% of turnover, equal to approximately 1,3 billion euros (pro-forma 2010).

The recent integration with Draka has significantly strengthened the Group's presence in the sector, as well as in areas with the greatest growth potential such as Europe, Asia Pacific, South America. Prysmian counts among its customers the main global telecommunications operators such as Verizon in the USA, of which it was one of the main partners in the FTTH cabling program of 3 million homes a year, British Telecom in Europe, Barthi in India and Telstra in Australia, where the Group is involved in the program for building broadband connections over 93% of the Australian territory and is the main supplier of optical cables for the National Broadband Network project.
