Impetus project: the Valle dei Laghi tests new vines to tackle climate change

The world of wine runs for cover against the effects of climate change which has been affecting the sector throughout Europe for years, prefiguring problematic scenarios for viticulture and for the quality of wine. In the awareness that it is necessary to promptly study effective solutions, which are able to adapt to the new ones challenges imposed by ever-changing ecosystems, the European Union launched the IMPETUS program – Turning climate commitments into action with the aim of addressing the sustainability theme with concrete actions by encouraging forward-looking and environmentally friendly viticulture.

Il program launched by the European Union, for the duration of four years, involves seven bioclimatic areas: from the Spanish coasts of Catalonia, to the arctic beaches of Troms in Norway, to then move on to Mediterranean, continental and Atlantic territories, up to the slopes of Monte Bondone in Trentino, in the Valle dei Laghi. The objective is to analyze and propose adaptable methodologies and techniques in all the seven selected regions, giving on the one hand a contribution to European winegrowers and farmers and on the other hand providing land management models to local bodies and authorities.

In the Valle dei Laghi the project involves the Toblino winery, a cooperative of producers.

The goal: an innovative, careful and sustainable viticulture with cutting-edge tools

“Those who work the vineyard every day – he declares Carlo De Biasi, general manager of Cantina Toblino and vice president of Lien de la Vigne – – Vinelink international, in the coming years will have to make decisive choices to better face the consequences of climate change. Today we have tools that allow us to mitigate the negative environmental effects on the quality of grapes and wines. We can carry out suitability analyzes and studies with cutting-edge tools that allow for the development, for example, of viticulture in areas with above-average altitudes, in order to preserve the elegance and fragrance of the wines. All this will allow us in the near future to improve the quality of the grapes through innovative, careful, rigorous and sustainable viticulture".

The Valle dei Laghi, an area dedicated to the production of excellent grapes and wines, fully enters the study project which tests simulation models, governance and decision support, new vines and shifting of cultivable areas, integrated management and evaluation of risk, activation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Eurac Research, a research center based in Bolzano, will take care of the survey by designing, testing and implementing solutions capable of optimally managing the most precious resource, water. Precisely this factor involved two important partners, essential for the success of the project and for the healthy and responsible management of the element in viticulture: the Sarca-Mincio-Garda mountain catchment area (BIM) and MobyGIS, a Trentino company that deals with modeling and optimization of the water cycle.

The theme of sustainability and climate change will also be dealt with by Carlo De Biasi at the next conference of the international association founded in 1992 for wine research and innovation. The intervention, scheduled for Friday 1st April in Paris at the Maisons des Arts e Metiers, entitled How to try to mitigate the effects of climate change for the production of Trento DOC sparkling wine, will deal with the effects of climate change on winegrowing mountains dedicated to the production of Trento DOC sparkling wines. The conference will be attended by numerous wine producers, from Europe and beyond, who will share their experiences in the field.
