Refugees, Renzi: "Europe must overcome Dublin"

The Premier in a letter to La Repubblica: “Europe is at a crossroads and it's not just the newspapers or politics that say it, it's under the eyes of each of us every day. Or rediscover the ideal reasons for being together. Or it becomes a boring condominium of abstract and sterile rules. Rules that are almost always economic, and moreover very often wrong”.

Refugees, Renzi: "Europe must overcome Dublin"

“It is therefore necessary to overcome Dublin. It is right that the hotspots are managed at a European level, but this will only be possible if each country welcomes a certain number of guests (quota) and the repatriations for those without the right to asylum will be organized by the European Union, and not by individual states”. The Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, writes this in a letter addressed today to the newspaper La Repubblica on the refugee emergency.

"Suddenly everyone realized what was happening - continues the Premier - and in the face of the tragedy they understood that there was no longer a way to turn away". Europe, according to Renzi, "has underestimated the weight of the initiatives in Libya and Syria", since it is not enough "to oust a dictator, we need to intervene culturally".

The EU has also “overestimated its ability to build a future in those territories”, failing to understand that one cannot win without “the educational, cultural, economic challenge in those countries; and therefore the political challenge”. The Prime Minister then praised the Italians engaged in saving human lives: “They are women, children, the elderly. killed; drowned by human traffickers. We have seen dozens of them die in the Mediterranean. And we have saved thousands of lives with the Navy, the Coast Guard, our volunteer work”.

In short, “Europe is at a crossroads – concludes Renzi -, and it's not just the newspapers or politics that say it, it is under the eyes of each of us every day. Or rediscover the ideal reasons for being together. Or it becomes a boring condominium of abstract and sterile rules. Rules that are almost always economic, and moreover very often wrong”.
