Professional income: here's who goes up and who goes down

Good for doctors and psychologists, bad for architects and lawyers, disaster for notaries and pharmacists. Over the course of 10 years, the income map of Italian freelancers has changed a lot, reducing the distance between the two extremes of the ranking. The richest have seen their income fall (even by a lot) and the less well-off have started to earn a little more.

In absolute value, the income level of the note remains unapproachable for other professions. Yet it is they, the scrooge par excellence, who have suffered the most significant drop in revenue. According to "2017 report on the free professions in Italy” published by Confprofessioni, the earnings of notaries have practically halved, going on average from 478 thousand euros in 2006 to 244 thousand in 2015 (latest data available).

Analogous speech for pharmacies, who remain in second place in the ranking, but with a significantly lower income than in the pre-crisis period: from 135 euros in 2006 to 116 euros three years ago (less than half of the notaries).

The podium closes medical studies, which however – while remaining at a stellar distance from the first two positions – have seen revenues rise in the period considered from 60 to 65 thousand euros a year.

They also get better Accountants, accountants, commercial experts e labor consultants (from 57 to 60 thousand), as well as the dental studies (from 46 to 52 thousand).

Stable the condition of the lawyers, with law firms that have limited the average income from 50 to 49 thousand euros a year. On the other hand, the income of the studios collapsed engineers (from 42 to 35 thousand euros) e architects (from 30 to 23 thousand euros).

«In most professions – reads the Report – the growth that occurred between 2006 and 2010 reversed in the more recent period: this dynamic particularly affects» the activities of engineers and architects, «who are affected by the marked crisis of construction and the blocking of public procurement".

Opposite dynamics for the income of agronomists (from 25 to 30 thousand euros), agricultural experts (from 22 to 28 thousand euros) e veterinary services (from 16 to 22 thousand euros), professions which, thanks to the growth of the agricultural and agro-industry sectors, have seen the most consistent increase in earnings (respectively by 23, 26 and 36%).

Returning to the income ranking, the last position belongs to the psychologists, which, however, are consoled by a sharp improvement in income, which has risen from 18 to 21 thousand euros a year.

    1. Public Administration managers are not freelancers, but civil servants. In any case, a ceiling of 240 euros per year is foreseen for them.
