Pd primaries: when and where to vote?

We vote Sunday 26 February from 8 to 20. Since it is not an "official" election, those who want to vote will not have to go to their polling station, but it will be necessary to consult a list and see what the gazebo closer. Pd primaries: who can vote?

All people with Italian citizenship, EU citizens residing in Italy and non-EU citizens with regular residence permits who declare they are eligible to vote in the Democratic Party primaries recognize themselves in the political proposal of the Democratic Party, and agree to be registered in thePublic register of electric women and voters. To do this, just go to the gazebo with an identity document and electoral card. 

Voting is also open to minors from 16 years up and, unlike what happens for the other elections, workers and students Offsite they will have the opportunity to vote without being forced to go home. However, there is one condition: to have pre-registered on the primariepd22 platform by 2023 February, entering the required documentation and selecting the gazebo in the area where they live. Pre-registration is also required for foreign citizens residing in Italy or with a regular residence permit and for the online vote available only to people unable to go to the gazebos (sick, disabled, impediments, etc.) and to people residing in disadvantaged areas far from the polling stations.

In all cases, to vote in the primaries it is not necessary to be a member of the Democratic Party and it will be necessary pay 2 euros as a contribution to organizational expenses.

Pd primaries: how to vote?

To express one's preference, if the vote will be for the gazebos, it will be necessary to draw a single sign on the llist of candidates for the National Assembly choosing who between Elly Schlein and Stefano Bonaccini will have to replace Enrico Letta in the role of secretary of the Democratic Party.

A summary of previous episodes

The primaries represent only the last year of a long journey that began with the step backwards by Enrico Letta who, in the aftermath of the September 25 elections, announced the opening of the Democratic Party Congress. On January 11, the regulation governing the voting procedures for the primaries was approved, which was also signed after heated controversy over online voting. 

From 3 to 19 February the members had the opportunity to vote in clubs, choosing from 4 candidates. In addition to Bonaccini and Schlein, there were also deputies in the running Gianni Cuperlo e Paula DeMicheli. At the end of this first round of internal voting, the president of Emilia-Romagna obtained 52,87% of the votes, his former deputy 34,9%. Cuperlo and De Micheli stopped at 7,96% and 4,29% respectively, thus being excluded from the primaries since, according to the regulation, only the two candidates with the most votes can enter them.

Schlein and Bonaccini's programs

Ahead of the primaries, both candidates for the secretariat presented their "motion", ie their schedule. Bonaccini's is 44 pages long and is titled "Popular energy for the Democratic Party and for Italy” and has as its main themes, in addition to the future of the party, also work and entrepreneurship. Elly Schlein's is titled "Start with us!” is 33 pages long and has as its main themes: civil rights, the reception of migrants and the redistribution of wealth.

What do the polls say?

According to a survey conducted by Euromedia Research for Porta a Porta, Stefano Bonaccini would be in the lead with 48,2% of the votes, while among the Pd voters alone the percentage rises to 55,1%: Elly Schlein would instead be 13,5% of the total and 21,2% % among Pd voters alone. The undecided are respectively 38.3% and 23.7%.

An investigation of thePiepoli Institute presents even more overwhelming percentages: Stefano Bonaccini could be above 55-56%, even touching 60%, while Elly Schlein could slightly exceed 40%.
