From today the price of petrol and diesel it gets taller. After nine months, the discount due to the increase of excise duties on fuel is halved as a result of decree of the Meloni Government of 23 November last. This is an increase of 10 cents, but the increase at the petrol pump will be higher: added to the 22% VAT, the tax on the tax, the price increase on supplies rises to 12,2 cents. This effectively halves the discount launched by the Draghi government of 30,5 cents. For LPG, on the other hand, the increase is equal to 18,73 euros per thousand liters which, including VAT, should translate into an impact of 2,3 cents per liter on the pump price.

At least for the moment, the tax increase will be mitigated by a slight (temporary) decrease in the prices of the crude oil price: since the beginning of the month, Brent prices have dropped from 95 to 85 dollars a barrel, a drop made even more marked by the recovery of the euro against the greenback. The new rates, barring any extensions, will remain valid for the entire month, until the end of 2022.

Higher petrol and diesel prices: the impact on supplies

In detail, from today, December 1st, the excise duties on gasoline they rise from 47,84 to 57,84 cents per liter, those on the diesel from 36,74 to 46,74 euros per liter, those on the LPG from 18,26 to 26,67 cents per litre. What does it mean? The highest petrol and diesel prices are not yet found, but according to the weekly average fuel and fuel prices detected by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (from 21/11/2022 to 27/22/2022) the national average of self-service petrol is 1,65 euro/litre, that of diesel is 1,74 and that of LPG at 0,768. As for prices in the "served" mode, the green average falls below 1,8, diesel is at 1,88 and LPG at 0,854.

For the state coffers, the rise in excise duties will translate into an extra 317 million euros in revenue in December alone, which means that in one year the gain will be 3,8 billion more in the tax authorities' coffers.
